I'm not your typical therapist. As an African American male who grew up in South Central Los Angeles, I bring a unique perspective to the therapeutic process. In the mental health field, Black male therapists are often referred to as "unicorns" due to their rarity. According to the American Psychological Association, only about 4% of psychologists in the United States are Black, and given that the broader community of therapists is 71% female, the percentage of Black male therapists is likely closer to one in 100. (Hechinger Report, American Psychological Association, 2022).
